Buck Moore spoke about what he calls the ‘D-Curve’ eq. Using a graphic EQ on typical commercial voiceover, he demonstrated how to improve intelligibility and reduce boxiness without resorting to sever compression settings. Basically:

Low Pass > Low-Mid Scoop > 3-6dB Boost Near 6-8kHz
