Congratulations to Orville Peck. The 2019 Polaris Longlist has been announced and Pony made the cut.
Last year I recorded a bunch of vocals for artist Orville Peck. What an incredible voice. The record got picked up by SubPop and it’s doing really well! Check out this interview with Fader magazine:

I had the occasion to put some of the scripting I’ve been using to good use.
A recent voice-over editing project involved cutting e-learning material in several foreign language. The clips were destined to play back programmatically and the client required a ~100ms buffer before and after each clip to avoid stuttering during playback or having the end lopped off. Apparently this had been an issue before with the audio engine they’re using in their … Read the rest “Python – Prepend 100ms Bumper”
I’ve been consulting with Toronto machine learning startup Dessa on an exciting audio based project. (more on that when the time is right)
The he engineers there have impressed me with what they’ve been able to accomplish in terms of analyzing and processing audio despite their inexperience working with audio in general. The experience has inspired me to get my feet wet with Python, the very popular and accessible programming language.
One of the best … Read the rest “Python the Hard Way”
I mixed this sweet li’l ditty by my friend Dad (Mike Bilenki). Dad’s lawn is trimmed and his pop songwriting is on point.
I mixed this song a few months back with local electronic producer MKSTN. Just released on Majestic Casual Records. Perfect spring vibes.
Available on iTunes, Spotify, and Soundcloud.
I helped with the mix on this 12″ techno release for Kikamora. Check it out.
The producer I was engineering for brought with him his Lexicon 960L reverb unit. What do you call this? Vintage digital? Modern Classic? It’s a a beast regardless, in the quality of its effects but also in its imposing 4u footprint and the ambient noise it spits out. The internal fans and especially the hard disk drive are very loud and without the luxury of a separate machine room … Read the rest “Quieting the Lexicon 960L”
At work we use an AMS Neve Genesys Console which is pretty great in a lot of ways. All of the internal routing, panning and channel EQ is totally recallable. Internally, the board is controlled by a PC running a custom Windows 7 front-end/wrapper.
The Genesys can also behave as a HUI control surface for Pro Tools but rather than interfacing with a slew of MIDI cables a Cat5e or Cat6 network cable connects the … Read the rest “Neve Genesys & ipMIDI”
I assembled 4 of these for the studio where I’ve been working. Mike at Hairball has done an amazing job, totally revamping the kits since I built mine a couple years ago.
The PCB has been redesigned to span the depth of the chassis and the front panel controls are mounted to the PCB, cutting the amount of wiring down drastically. The attack and release controls are similarly mounted to a daughter board which connects … Read the rest “Hairball FET Rack 1176”
